James Clyde Styron interviews, 1981 May 11-13.

Two interviews containing descriptions of places where Styron lived: Shreveport, La., and Caddo, Coalgate, and Hobart, Okla.; father's dry good store and what was sold; attending West Point (1916-1918), and graduating (1918); WWI service in France with the U.S. Army's coast artillery; attending cotton grading school and living in Coalgate, Okla., until 1926; service during WWII in the Sicilian campaign as full colonel in 1943, becoming the 45th Division commander in 1944; promoted to Maj. Gen.; service in Korea with the 45th Division (1950-1951); return to Hobart, Okla., and the cotton buying business (1951-1968).

West Point, N.Y., was originally utilized as a strategic defense location during the American Revolution. West Point is geographically located on a 100 ft. plateau overlooking the Hudson River. After the American victory Congress created a Corps of Invalids (veterans) that were transferred to West Point for the purpose of instructing candidates for commission.
